The 'Infrastructure Carbon, EN17472' tool has been created to be aligned with the FprEN 17472 standard for the Sustainability of Construction works - Sustainability Assessment Civil Engineering Works - Calculation Methods.
Life-Cycle & Results Scope
The calculation includes the life cycle modules of A1-A5, B1-B8, C1-C4, and D. The results are provided in kg CO2e.
Data Scope
This tool allows using of the Type III EPDs (CML), and it is the only infrastructure calculation tool that accepts EN15804+A2 EPDs as well.
Assessment Scope
There is no fixed scope to which elements need to be included in the assessment.
1 - Create a project and select the right calculation tool
Create a building project and select the 'Infrastructure Carbon, EN17472' tool as the chosen calculation tool.
2 - Create your first design and set up your LCA parameters.
More information on that is here: Selecting Project Parameters
3 - Input required material data
Fill in your project information in One Click LCA by entering the design either manually or by importing your data (see different import options here; guidance for data import can be found here). If you need help finding the right datasets for your building materials, check our guidance pages here and here.
Earthworks and mass hauling can be reported under its own tab, material information should not be added to that tab.
When you enter materials to Construction Materials tab, the default impact stage of these inputs is related to is the product stage A. However, if you want to specify the stage of environmental impacts yourself, it is possible to change the 'Impact stage' from the drop down menu. This allows the user to create constructions with maintenance, repair and site work included under the same section.
4 - Fill in the Construction site Operations
Fill in your emissions related to the construction process.
5 - Fill in the Use Phase emissions
Fill in your Use Phase emissions, this includes B1-B3, B6, and B7. These are annual emissions.
For B2 and B3 fill in your project information in One Click LCA by manually entering data. More information on that is here: Maintenance and Repair Data (B2 & B3)
The EN17472 Infrastructure carbon tool reports additionally on B8, Users' utilization of infrastructure. This requires you to report on annual emissions. The official standard states the following:
The boundary for Module B8 covers all aspects, impacts, revenues, and costs relevant to the users’ utilization of the civil engineering works during its normal operation and only for the civil engineering works' intended use. The amounts of utilities (e.g. energy or freshwater) exiting the boundaries because of the intended use of the civil engineering works shall be reported within this Module B8. Net benefits resulting from the use of those amounts of utilities exiting the boundaries shall be reported in Module D, see 7.4.7.3. Utilities produced by the asset as part of the activity, but not intended as any of the functions, shall be reported in Module D.
6 - Fill in the Calculation Period
This is required to calculate replacements and end-of-life emissions.
7 - Review the results and download the results report
If you are pursuing credits that can have multiple outcomes, ensure you document your achieved reductions (this requires more than one design). Percentile comparisons can be done on the main project page graphs and with the 'compare' function on the results page.
