This feature allows those with Carbon Designer 3D and an Expert license to create templates for the quick generation of customized reference buildings.
How do you use the Carbon Designer 3D Templates?
This feature is available in Carbon Designer 3D, for more information on Carbon Designer 3D please check the following article: Carbon Designer 3D. Carbon Designer 3D is an add-on and is not automatically included with all licenses.
Creating a custom template
You will first have to create a design, select the building type, define the scope, and calculate the geometry. You can select a building type, however, the template will be usable on any building type unless manually restricted at a later step. The steps for setting up a Carbon Designer 3D reference building are explained in-depth in the Carbon Designer 3D article. The custom template will be restricted to the chosen reference building typology (in the example we used the International reference building) as the majority of reference building types have data restrictions.
Turning the custom template into a private template
After you have created the template, you can adjust the used constructions, the materials inside those constructions, and so on. You then have the option to either save the design to your project or save it as a private template. Selecting 'Save as a private template' will allow you to provide some more details on what the template should include.
Saving the template
Once you click on 'Save as a private template' you will need to name the template. This template will be visible to all users in your organisation, so think of a usefull name to distinguish it from the other templates. You will be able to select which building elements to include, if you exclude building elements then the Carbon Designer 3D default constructions will be used when you create a new reference building.
If you are a 'main user' of your organisation you will be able to save the template right away. If not, a main user in your organisation will still have to approve your template for adding it to the company account.
Editing saved templates
Saved templates can be found in the company account under the 'data management' tab. On the bottom, you will find the 'Carbon Designer 3D Templates'. Clicking on 'Edit' opens the list of templates.
The edits which can be made here are the following:
- Main users can publish (approve) or delete existing templates.
- Main users can edit the names of existing templates
- Main users can restrict the templates to be used for specific building types only
If you want to edit the constituents of the template, this will need to be done in Carbon Designer 3D itself and saved as a private template there.
