An update to the Building Circularity tool provides some new features to support DGNB users in calculating and exporting a Building Resource Passport (Gebäuderessourcenpass), as well as an International version of the report for other users.
The tool expands on the previous version by providing more classifications of material content at the start of the lifecycle, more classifications of end of life (EOL) material processing types, and allows the user to choose between using the existing EOL scenarios or select different processing types at different lifecycle stages (A5 and C3-4). The tool is currently marked beta as more features are planned.
The goal of the Building Circularity tool is to calculate the circularity percentage of your building/asset. It does not have a mandatory scope and can be used to access single materials or whole buildings.
As the tool is designed to work with many other tools, there are no data constraints. Therefore, it is recommended that the tool is added to an existing project with a completed Building materials query, then adding the additional data for calculating circularity, rather than adding materials directly.
Material origin
For each resource you can assign a percentage content of reused, repurposed, recycled, downcycled, and renewable content.
These are defined according to DIN as:
Classification | Definition |
Reused | Reusing a product or material in the same function it was created for. |
Repurposed | Reusing a product or material in a new function which it wasn't originally created for. |
Recycled | Processing of a product or material in a closed-loop system, retaining it's original quality. |
Downcycled | Processing of a product or material with a loss of original quality. |
End of life
Each resource will still have a default end of life scenario, which are based on the material type. In this new version of the tool, you can choose whether to use the default or any other scenario, or manually override this for construction site and demolition wastage (A5) or end of life (C3-4).
When selecting a scenario from EOL Process, the following inputs are automatically populated by the scenario's values, and changing the scenario updates the values (see below).
If you wish to use the scenario for calculations, no more action is required. If you wish to manually select different processing types for A5 and C3-4, or override the share of material between C3 and C4, this is now possible. The quantity of material at A5 is calculated using the Wastage input as before.
Any changes to the processing types or share of material do not affect life cycle assessment results and are only used for documenting circularity.
Building Resource Passport (Gebäuderessourcenpass)
This version of the tool supports DGNB users by providing an option to export a Word report according to Version 1.1 of DGNB Gebäuderessourcenpass requirements.
It is recommended that a full life cycle assessment using the LCA for DGNB (DE 2023) tool is completed before adding the Building Circularity V2 tool to the project, to ensure only data suitable for DGNB is added to your bill of materials. Once complete, the extra detail can be added in the Building materials query to calculate the circularity metrics, and the Word report downloaded directly from the Building Circularity V2 results page.
Please note that the Word report is linked to company account licences due to company information (name, logo) being added to the report.
